January 2025: Katie Metz + Andie Trosper Deroux

Opening January 9, 2025. 5-9pm
Katie Metz + Andie Trosper Deroux
(show runs through 2/1/25)

This month we are featuring two artists who compliment each other and skillfully convey the quiet emotions and complex moods associated with this time of year in the Pacific Northwest.

Katie Metz says, "The urban environment has always captivated me with its sense of awe and wonder. Each cityscape tells countless stories, unfolding simultaneously in every corner of my vision as I move through its spaces. This dynamic subject offers endless challenges and opportunities, fueling my artistic exploration and vision.

I am drawn to examining cities from diverse angles, striving to convey the essence of these stories through my work. Whether manipulating perspective and line, exaggerating details, or simplifying forms, I have developed a range of styles that reflect my evolving artistic voice. Across these varied approaches, my distinct perspective remains a constant thread, tying my work together."

About Katie Metz: She grew up on an old former dairy farm called Popcorn Acres outside Boulder, Colorado, where the expansive natural landscape became a boundless source of inspiration for her imagination and artistic vision. She honed her traditional painting skills in the late 1990s through mentorships with established painters, developing a strong foundation in technique and creativity. By 2000, Katie was exhibiting her work in various venues across Colorado.

In 2005, Katie relocated to Seattle, where she has continued to evolve her artistic approach, methods, and vision. Over the past 15 years, her work has been showcased in annual solo exhibitions and featured in galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. Her pieces are held in numerous private collections worldwide, reflecting her growing influence and appeal as an artist

Andie Trosper Deroux
says, "These contemplative abstract paintings are inspired by my lifelong observations of nature in the Pacific Northwest. The imagery slowly reveals itself, just as nature reveals itself when you slow down, and intimately observe in the present moment..
I clear my mind, and then pick out some colors to explore with. Then, I just let my mind wander as I intuitively create marks with the paint, creating in a language uniquely my own. A structure, rhythmic textures emerge. As the painting develops, I continue building up layers of paint and translucent epoxy resin mixed with glass and sometimes clay, to create depth and dimension. A recording of my thought process, as my mind dances with the paint, and wanders in a garden of light. When the painting becomes more than just me, I know it's done."

About Andie: Andie Trosper DeRoux, born in 1969 in Seattle, is a multifaceted artist with a strong artistic lineage, being raised by artist parents who fostered her creativity in an environment rich in art and nature. Her mother, a ceramic and printmaking artist, and her father, a painter and interior designer, created an artistic atmosphere complemented by the natural beauty of the nearby Olmsted-designed Washington Park Arboretum.
