Experimental Films by Jon Behrens
Friday, 4/11/8, 8PM. (Donation)
We're inaugurating the 10'x10' movie screen with films by local film luminary Jon Behrens. Jon is a prolific filmmaker as well as a collector of vintage TV, movies and commercials. This Friday we're showing his highly acclaimed collection of short works with snacks and wine. He's organizing future events here featuring vintage 60's toy commercials and Sci-Fi classics, reviving the program he used to have on the back porch at Linda's Tavern.
Here's his web site.
You can also see samples of some of his archives
here.

Consumer Conquest, Stacey Farrar Thursday 4/10/8. 6-10PM. (Free)
Capitol Hill has always been a destination for art and culture but now our humble block is coming alive with Vermillion and Grey Gallery and Lounge providing a new opportunity to see upcoming and career artists in a gallery setting with the luxury of a more casual setting.
This Thursday, Grey is having an opening for Amy Ellen
Flatchestedmama
Trefsger. Also, highly recommended is the "Bookish" exhibit curated by Carrie E.A. Scott at the Hedreen Gallery just down the street at Seattle U.
Due to the neighborhood activity, we're open late (6PM-10PM) to present
Consumer Conquest
by Stacey Farrar. Stacey is exploring the idea of endless consumerism and planned obsolescence with his "breathing piles of consumer items" and intricate drawings of soon-to-be-extinct items like cassette mixapes and incandescent lightbulbs. Throughout April.

Con Art by Vermillion
Thursday, 4/10/8 6-10PM. (Free)
Also this week: Large format prints of the buildout here and other emblematic "installations" of the ridiculously useless clutter we've ended up with throughout this process. The word "Con" in "Con Art" represents "Construction", "Conceptual", "Consumer", etc... Conceptual Art is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns (Yes, thx Wikipedia). This month we mix it up and mock it a little. This runs throughout April Wed-Sat 1-6.
Other Tidbits
Occasionally we get a chance to escape to wonderful, creative venues and Vermillion highly suggests Travis Louie at
Roq la Rue
(same night as our films but go early, get here at 8) and if you're in Portland go to a newer gallery called
Quality Pictures
and check out
Eric White. We had the pleasure of meeting him last week and saw his latest work which was understandably a sold out success.
We look forward to seeing you -- Diana
More Jon Behrens info
Jon Behrens has been developing his unique style of cinema since the early 1980s, focusing on the physical film as an art form as much as a narrative medium. Many of his films use hand-manipulating techniques such as scratching of the emulsion and painting directly on to the film. His films have been screened at museums, film restivals, colleges and small underground cinemas throughout the world for nearly 25 years and Behrens has won several international awards over the years for his outstanding achievements in motion pictures. He has also served as a Selection Panelist for grants and fellowships through Artist Trust.
