Hannah Cwiek: To No Avail.Opening Thursday, May 8, 2014 6-9pm

The works in To No Avail. explore the connections between vulnerability, obedience, and conditioning, and how these concepts structure thought and reasoning.  Subjects with circular actions, such as racing dogs with little ability to function outside of running around a track, exist as metaphors for human limitation and lack of awareness. The momentum that anything cyclical in nature has is thought provoking to me: it perpetually exists, yet is limited to one singular path. I am influenced by the existent struggle in challenging power, as well as the preceding feelings of futility and exhaustion that can keep us running in circles that we may not desire to be in.

Bio:

Hannah Cwiek is a Bellingham based artist currently finishing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Western Washington University. She works in various mediums from 2-D to sculpture, but is best known for her large scale mixed media drawings that frequently depict canine movement. These exist on paper and as temporary installations drawn straight onto gallery walls. The scale of the images increases in the form of a wall drawing, creating a stimulating yet overwhelming experience for the viewer.
